How to choose the right Career when unsure

by The Ghana HIT

A large percentage of people know what they want, but the various career options end up confusing many. In case you don’t know where to venture, the mission seems impossible. The ways of choosing the right career are;

Begin by assessing Yourself

The only way to choose the right career is to understand yourself first. This includes assessing your personality, personal interests, knowledge and skills, and talents and analyzing the job that will suit you. You can use career assessments together with self-assessment tools to get the correct information about your traits and then come up with a list of all the careers that are suitable for you. Other people prefer coordinating with career advisers and professionals to help them decide on the most appropriate job.

Write down a list of all Careers you want to Explore

Perhaps you have several lists of the occupations generated using the available self-assessment tools. You should narrow all the careers to ten to twenty jobs in an ordered manner. You can begin by assessing all the occupations appearing on the various list and then prioritising them. Find any career that attracts you, or you are aware of it, and you want to explore further. Additionally, you can include all professions you’d love to know more about. If you are curious and want to learn other things, you can try a career that you don’t know but aligns with your traits.

Explore all Careers on Your List

After writing down the career list, you can research further and get some basic information about all the occupations on your list. You can start finding out the job descriptions for such careers, educational training, and licensing need in some trusted sources. Besides, you can use any labour market information to know more about the salary and the job outlook.

Narrow down the Career list again

After exploring and researching, you can narrow down your list again based on what you’ve learned. This involves eliminating any career with unfavourable job requirements such as unappealing duties and weak outlooks. Eliminate any profession that you are not competent to do or you can’t achieve the educational needs. The final list should only have around two to five careers. This list should be based on the required knowledge and skills.

Attends informational Interviews

When you are finally left with the most suitable career based on skills and other job benefits, you can now start doing some comprehensive research about them. You can even look for people in such positions and meet with them to learn more about that particular career. These people offer some firsthand information about the profession on your list. Additionally, you can access helpful networks such as LinkedIn to find people who conduct informational interviews.

Choose Your Career

You can choose one career after doing all the research. Select the career that you feel will satisfy all your interests, depending on the information acquired during your research. In case you change your mind concerning your choice at any point in your career, you are allowed to go for other options. Some people change their career several times, therefore in case of boredom or realize any better field you can change.

List all your goals

Long-term goals last between three to five years to achieve, while short term goals can be reached within a period of five months to three years. List all your long- and short-term goals, and identify whether your career rhymes with it. This assists you in working towards securing your dream job.

The goals should be based on education and training requirements of that career. Once you have all the required information, you can set your short and long-term goals. Appling for training, internships, university or college, apprenticeships is a good example of short-term goals. Finalizing your education and training is a good example of a long-term goal.
