Prisons service Ghana has announced that the president has granted amnesty to 808 prisoners. According to the statement Akufo-Addo granted amnesty to 783 first offenders, 11 ill prisoners. The president went ahead to order that 7 prisoners on death sentence to serve on life imprisonment while 4 on life imprisonment to serve a 20-year term in prison. Three old prisoners who are over 70 years were also granted amnesty.
President Akufo-Addo is decongesting the prisons to avoid the spread of coronavirus in the prisons. Ghana is currently the third most affected country in Africa with a total of 132 confirmed coronavirus cases.
