On Thursday, the Sudanese expressed their fear following Ethiopia’s plan to continue with the 2nd phase of filling the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). The irrigation and water Resource minister, Yasir Abbas, addressed the issue through a letter to the African Union (AU).
His letter read, “The announcement by the Ethiopian Minister of Irrigation and Energy on his country’s intention to proceed with the GERD filling for the second year of 13.5 billion cubic meters of water in coming July. Without prior notification and without signing a deal or exchanging of information with the Al-Rusaires Dam. This is a direct threat to Al-Rusaires Dam and to the lives of those who live on the banks of the Nile.”
For some time now, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Egypt have been negotiating about the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). Sudan and Ethiopia rely on the Nile dam for freshwater while it’s Ethiopia’s source of electricity.
