The National Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Ghana has donated GH¢100,000 to help deal with coronavirus. The money was raised through a voluntary contribution from the institution’s members.

The cheque was presented to the presidency by the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s President Dr. Appiagyei Dankawoso. In his statement:

“As the representative organ of the business community in Ghana, it is in our collective interest to work together and mitigate the impact of the COVID-19.

“On behalf of the Council, Membership, and Staff of the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI), I wish to present a cash donation of GH¢100,000.00 to the National COVID-19 Trust Fund in support of the COVID-19, fight.

“I urge our members and the business community to continue adhering to the preventive measures announced by the government and also make voluntary contributions to the National COVID-19 Trust Fund.”

Dankawoso insisted that they are working on a way with the government to support businesses during this hard time. Many businesses have closed down as a result of the virus and also the partial lockdown which has been put in place at the major towns in Ghana to curb the spread.

The cheque was received by Justice Sophia Akuffo who is the current chairperson of the COVID19 Trust Fund. In her statement, she thanked the Chamber for the support insisting that she would work together to ensure that businesses are back. She also noted that she understands that businesses are the most hit by the pandemic.

Ghana is struggling to contain the spread of coronavirus. One thing that the government has managed to contain is inflation. At the moment the rate of inflation in the country remains at 7.8% despite the panic buys by many citizens. Many people have however lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic.
